“The Mellon Blue Diamond Sells for $25.6 Million at Christie’s Geneva”

Mellon Blue Diamond

A diamond of history, rarity, and timeless allure—The Mellon Blue has once again captivated the world of high jewelry. A decade after making headlines for its record-breaking sale, the 9.51-carat fancy vivid blue diamond resurfaced at Christie’s Geneva, selling for $25.6 million. Though this price marked a drop from its previous $32.6 million sale, the gem remains one of the most coveted treasures in the world of fine jewels.

A Gem with a Storied Past

The Mellon Blue diamond carries a fascinating provenance. Once owned by Rachel “Bunny” Lambert Mellon, the late American horticulturalist, philanthropist, and art collector, the gem embodies both artistic legacy and timeless sophistication. It was last seen publicly during the 2014 Sotheby’s auction of her estate, where it made history by setting two records — the highest price paid for a blue diamond and the highest price per carat ever achieved at auction.

Christie’s Geneva: A Stage of Luxury and Legacy

At Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva, the Mellon Blue fetched $25.6 million, comfortably within its estimated range of $20–30 million. Despite not surpassing its 2014 record, it still became the most expensive jewel sold by Christie’s in 2025, reaffirming collectors’ enduring fascination with rare colored diamonds.

Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s Global Luxury Group Chairman, expressed pride in presenting the gem:

“It was another notable moment for Christie’s Luxury, evidencing the elite appetite amongst collectors for extraordinary and storied gems.”

A Market Defined by Rarity and Confidence

Christie’s Geneva Luxury Week showcased over 100 exceptional jewels, achieving a total of $75.6 million in sales. Highlights included The Rainbow Collection — 300 natural colored diamonds sold for $2.2 million — and an 8.68-carat fancy purplish-pink diamond ring by JAR, which reached $3.1 million.

Adding a touch of royal glamour, a ruby and diamond brooch worn by Helena Violet Alice, Third Countess of Stradbroke, to King Edward VII’s coronation in 1902, sold for $2.8 million, exceeding its high estimate.

Max Fawcett, Christie’s new Global Head of Jewelry, described the results as a reflection of a market driven by confidence, rarity, and craftsmanship.

The Enduring Allure of Blue Diamonds

Blue diamonds remain among the most mesmerizing and valuable gemstones in the world. From the legendary Oppenheimer Blue that sold for $57.5 million to The Bleu Royal at $44 million, these stones continue to represent prestige, rarity, and an eternal fascination with nature’s rarest wonders.

While The Mellon Blue may have sold for less than a decade ago, its story, beauty, and legacy still shine brighter than ever — a timeless reminder that true luxury transcends price.
